The Billy Webb Elks Lodge, a beloved social hub in Portland’s African American community for generations, has recently gotten a facelift thanks to the National Association of Minority Contractors of Oregon and many volunteers.
Constructed in 1926 as the Colored YWCA, the landmark is a staple in Portland’s black past. It has provided a forum for black musicians and a social club for African American soldiers and their families.
The lodge was also a refuge for people fleeing the 1948 Vanport Flood, in addition to hosting many weddings and special gatherings.
The renovation project, managed by CJ Jackson Construction, incorporates sustainable and energy saving technologies, including lowered ceilings and more efficient furnaces. The lodge has also undergone architectural improvements in addition to basic improvements like new roof shingles and new siding.
In total, $2 million were invested into the structure by lodge members, suppliers and volunteers.
On Tuesday, June 23, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., the lodge, located on the corner of North Tillamook Street and Williams Avenue, will throw open its doors for the public to take a look.
The Elks are looking forward as well. The revamped building has rooms for Yoga and floor exercises, in addition to space for community activities and meetings.
But the work isn’t done.
The lodge still hopes to acquire appliances for lunch and catering events, chairs, and an air conditioning unit for the building.
