We hear a lot about the importance of being connected to our children, but what does “being connected” means? There are many ways parents and adults can connect and sustain communication with their children and teens.
Parent-child connectedness is the emotional bond between a parent and a child that is both mutual and sustained over time. This “super protector” is something that gives parents and youth the skills and bond needed to openly discuss the many challenges and risks facing youth in today’s world, including tobacco use, alcohol use, depression, peer and societal pressure, eating disorders, unintended pregnancy, and HIV and Sexually Transmitted Infections.
